Our family coffee estate was originally situated in Hadageri village, but water was scarce. Recognizing the importance of water for agriculture, my husband decided to sell our inherited estate. We then purchased 170 acres in the same village, of which 100 acres was uncultivated virgin land along the Hutti River.

Coffee prices hit a low in 2019, making cultivation difficult despite the availability of labor. It was a struggle. Still, we cultivated and planted the entire area. As growers in an Arabica zone, we maintained 30% Arabica and 70% Robusta, intercropped with pepper, areca, and cardamom. 🌾

Our estate stretches across rolling hills and valleys at high elevation, from 2,750 ft to 3,900 ft. High elevation and cool temperatures aid bean development — slow ripening creates denser, sweeter coffee beans. 🌱

We blend traditional practices with modern processing. Coffee beans contain over 1,000 volatile organic compounds, and intentional fermentation helps develop specific flavor profiles. In specialty coffee, the ripest cherries are selectively hand-picked, washed, and then undergo thoughtful post-harvest processing — whether washed, natural, or honey — to produce a balanced, bold, fruity, and clean cup. 🧪☕

If coffee is dried as a whole cherry, it’s called the natural process. If the skin is removed and the bean is dried with the sticky mucilage intact, it’s called the honey process. And if the mucilage is removed by washing, it’s called washed coffee. 🍒

Post-harvest processing requires meticulous care to maintain quality. The water used for processing, our drying patio, and the pulping unit must be spick and span. Drying the beans to the right moisture level, bagging, and the bags used for storage — every step is carefully managed. 📏🧼

Having mixed crops — coffee, pepper, cardamom, and areca — helps balance risk. If one crop fails, faces disease, or sees price fluctuations, the others provide stability. It also supports disease management and a healthier ecosystem. 🌶️🎋

Bees are the quiet heartbeat of life on Earth. We must learn to respect them. If bees cease to exist, it will be the end of existence.

I am a passionate beekeeper and I promote beekeeping in Coorg. It is my dream to see all coffee growers become beekeepers, as it was fifty years ago. Bees are not just for honey — they are pollinators for almost all crops, including vegetables. Robusta coffee is cross-pollinated, and areca, coconut, and cardamom depend on bees for pollination. Cardamom is 100% dependent on bees. We must wake up to this fact soon. 🍯🌼

We are Rainforest Alliance certified. I was the Rainforest Alliance Ambassador for South East Asia in 2022. This certification reflects our commitment to biodiversity and climate-resilient farming. 🦜💚

International coffee events around the world and in India help showcase different coffees and processing methods from various nations, the best brewing equipment, and technological advancements in farming — all on one platform. They bring the global coffee-growing community together.

Coffee is the second-largest commodity traded in the world. These events help farmers connect directly with roasters, exporters, and café owners to showcase their single-origin coffees. Indian coffee is slowly gaining recognition and setting its own international standards. Indian coffee is on par with the best in the world. 🗺️☕

We truly appreciate your support for farmers. The reach that media and social media have today is phenomenal. A small roadside vendor can now make a good living if they know how to present themselves online — this is one of the best developments of our time.

It bridges the gap between growers and consumers, giving farmers a direct voice to share their stories, showcase their craft, and build fair value for their produce. Social media has democratized opportunity: a cup of coffee grown in Coorg can now reach a café in New York, all through one post. 📱💻

The Codagu Women’s Coffee Awareness Body (CWCAB) has over 400 women growers as members from Coorg. I have been serving as Secretary for the past 15 years. Our organization’s motto is to promote coffee consumption in Kodagu and Karnataka.

Women have a wide reach and can create awareness at home and within their communities. We are dedicated, authentic, and hardworking. This helps us motivate the younger generation to return to farming. 💪🤝

The younger generation can make a huge difference by blending traditional practices with science and technology. They have a better understanding of new tools, engage in interactive sessions with scientists, and have the courage to introduce new technologies. This can transform the farming sector, improve yields, and open new avenues — from farm to cup, café culture, and direct-to-consumer models — creating jobs and possibilities we once thought unimaginable.

Our son, Muddappa Appanervanda, returning from the US to become a coffee grower has helped us immensely. Now, through CWCAB, we are educating farmers on how young minds coming back can transform our farming practices and yields. With good internet connectivity even in remote areas of Coorg today, youngsters can also manage dual roles, like working from home while supporting the family farm.

Future Goals: We have started a company named Surya Kiran Coffee Co. We hull, grade, roast, and powder coffee, and sell to Indian roasters and cafés. We are also exploring avenues to buy and export specialty coffee directly to exporters. 🎓🏢

ಕಾಫಿಯನ್ನು ಪೂರ್ಣ ಹಣ್ಣಿನಂತೆಯೇ ಒಣಗಿಸಿದರೆ ಅದನ್ನು ನ್ಯಾಚುರಲ್ ಪ್ರೊಸೆಸ್ ಎನ್ನಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಹಣ್ಣಿನ ಸಿಪ್ಪೆಯನ್ನು ತೆಗೆದು, ಬೀಜದ ಮೇಲಿರುವ ಜಿಗುಟಾದ ಅಂಶದೊಂದಿಗೆ (mucilage) ಒಣಗಿಸಿದರೆ ಅದನ್ನು ಹನಿ ಪ್ರೊಸೆಸ್ ಎನ್ನಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. ಮತ್ತು ಈ ಜಿಗುಟಾದ ಅಂಶವನ್ನು ತೊಳೆದು ತೆಗೆದರೆ ಅದನ್ನು ವಾಶ್ಡ್ ಕಾಫಿ ಎನ್ನಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. 🍒

ಕೊಯ್ಲಿನ ನಂತರದ ಸಂಸ್ಕರಣೆಗೆ ಹೆಚ್ಚಿನ ಕಾಳಜಿ ಅಗತ್ಯ. ಸಂಸ್ಕರಣೆಗೆ ಬಳಸುವ ನೀರು, ಒಣಗಿಸುವ ಅಂಗಳ (drying patio) ಮತ್ತು ಪಲ್ಪಿಂಗ್ ಯುನಿಟ್ ಅತ್ಯಂತ ಸ್ವಚ್ಛವಾಗಿರಬೇಕು. ಕಾಫಿಯನ್ನು ಸರಿಯಾದ ತೇವಾಂಶಕ್ಕೆ ಒಣಗಿಸುವುದು, ಪ್ಯಾಕಿಂಗ್ ಮಾಡುವುದು ಮತ್ತು ಸಂಗ್ರಹಣೆಗೆ ಬಳಸುವ ಚೀಲಗಳು — ಪ್ರತಿಯೊಂದು ಹಂತವನ್ನೂ ಎಚ್ಚರಿಕೆಯಿಂದ ನಿರ್ವಹಿಸಲಾಗುತ್ತದೆ. 📏🧼

ಕೊಡಗು ಮಹಿಳಾ ಕಾಫಿ ಜಾಗೃತಿ ಸಮಿತಿ (CWCAB) ಕೊಡಗಿನ 400 ಕ್ಕೂ ಹೆಚ್ಚು ಮಹಿಳಾ ಬೆಳೆಗಾರರನ್ನು ಸದಸ್ಯರನ್ನಾಗಿ ಹೊಂದಿದೆ. ನಾನು ಕಳೆದ 15 ವರ್ಷಗಳಿಂದ ಕಾರ್ಯದರ್ಶಿಯಾಗಿ ಸೇವೆ ಸಲ್ಲಿಸುತ್ತಿದ್ದೇನೆ. ಕೊಡಗು ಮತ್ತು ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದಲ್ಲಿ ಕಾಫಿ ಸೇವನೆಯನ್ನು ಉತ್ತೇಜಿಸುವುದು ನಮ್ಮ ಸಂಸ್ಥೆಯ ಧ್ಯೇಯವಾಕ್ಯವಾಗಿದೆ.
