Kakkada Padinet festival in Coorg Kakkada Padhinett-(Ashaada 18th): Ashaada Kakkada Padhinett-(Ashaada 18th): On the 18th day of “Kakkada” month, “maddhu soppu” a wild herb’s leaves are said to contain 18 varieties of herbal medicine as the plants emit a sweet aroma only on that day. Maddhu soppu is plucked and boiled in water to get the aromatic juice which will be in dark violet colour. Cakes and sweet porridge is prepared from this juice and consumed. Kakkada is a month in the Kodava calendar falling between July 17th and August 16th during the monsoon season amid heavy downpour, biting cold and dark cloud cover. Kakkada is nothing but Ashada of the Kannadigas, Aati of the Tulvas and Aadi of the Tamils. The 18th day of Kakkada month is celebrated as the festival pertaining to Ayurvedic herbs. Kakkada month in Kodava calendar in Coorg, is one considered of the significant and auspicious days. aati soppu, kakkada paayasa. On the 18th day of kakkada, a sweet dish is prepared using the juice of a particular variety of plant called ‘maddh thopp’ which yields a dark purple juice when crushed. The juice is darkest during ‘kakkada’, indicating that its medicinal value is at its height. The dish is called ‘maddh kool’. It is believed that the plant has 18 kinds of medicinal values on the 18th day of ‘kakkada’. Huttari Festival in Coorg Huthri Festival: Harvest Festival  Huthri Festival: Huthri in November/December Huthri of Karnataka is a harvest festival celebrated in areas around Coorg in Karnataka. Variety of dances and folk songs are performed on the festival day. This harvest festival is celebrated in the months of November-December. Held in Puttari which literally means New Rice is the rice harvest festival. The festival takes place late November or early December and is a time for the entire family to assemble in their main courtyard, which is decorated with flowers, green mango and banana leaves. Everyone reaches the paddy fields and a gun is fired to signify the beginning of the harvest. A wide variety of mouth watering dishes are also prepared in celebration. Puttari means new rice, and is the rice harvest festival (also called huttari in adjacent Kannada-speaking country). This takes place in late November or early December. Celebrations and preparations for this festival start a week in advance. On the Puttari day, the family assembles in the ayn mane (the common family house) which is decorated with flowers and green mango and banana leaves. Then the eldest member of the family hands a sickle to the head of the family, and one of the women leads a procession to the paddy fields, with a lit lamp in her hands. The path leading to the field is decorated. A gunshot is fired to mark the beginning of the harvest, with chanting of “Poli Poli Deva” (prosperity) by all the people present there. Madikeri Dassera Festival : (Navrathri celebrations) Dasara is one of the festivals which is celebrated by all the people of Madikeri. Madikeri Dasara is a 10 day celebration, which is beautified by 4 Karagas and 10 Mantapas depicting killing of Asuras [demons] by Suras [God/Goddess]. Preparation for Madikeri dasara starts before 3 months of Navarathri. Most of the money for this celebration is collected from the people of Kodagu. There are 4 Mariamma Temples in the town: Dandina Mariamma, Kanchi Kamakshi, Kundurumotte Sri Chowti Mariamma and Kote Mariamma. All the Temples will be decorated by Lights and the whole Madikeri looks more beautiful on these 10 days. The city Dasara Committee organises Cultural programs all the 10 days. Kaveri Sankramana in Coorg Event Date: mid-October Day-17 Kaveri Sankramana Associated with the River Cauvery Kaveri Sankramana: mid-October Day-17, is associated with the river Cauvery. At a predetermined time, when the sun enters Tula Rasi, a fountain from a small tank is said to fill the bigger holy tank at Talacauvery. At this time, people throng in thousands to take a dip in this holy water as well as collect the water in bottles to carry along. Married women especially adorn themselves with new clothes and make offerings to Goddess Cauvery. The Goddess is prayed to by offerings of rice. A hearty meal is prepared which consist of a wide variety of vegetarian delicacies. This festival normally takes place in mid-October. It is associated with the river Kaveri, which flows through the district from its source at Talakaveri. At a predetermined time, when the sun enters Tula Rasi (Tula sankramana,) a fountain from a small tank fills the bigger holy tank at Talakaveri. People throng in thousands to take a dip in this holy water. The water is collected in bottles and reaches every house in Kodagu, and this is called Theertha – holy water. Kailpodh Festival in Coorg Event Date: 08-08-2017 Kailpodhu Festival of Arms Kailpodhu  in September, Kailpodhu is more popularly known as the Festival of Arms celebrated in September. During this, all weapons and arms are removed, cleaned, polished and worshipped before being put to use. The festival also signifies the day when men prepare to guard their crop from wild boars. The entire family assembles in the open ground and various entertainment and sporting activities take place. The sports are conducted in community groups called Kodava Samajas. The festival is celebrated on the 18th day after the sun enters the Simha (Leo) Raasi. Kail means weapon or armoury, and Pold means festival. The day signifies the completion of “nati” – meaning the transplantation of the rice (paddy) crop. Normally, during the months in which the family is engaged in the fields, all weapons are deposited in the “Kanni Kombare” or the prayer room. The festival also signifies the day that men should prepare to guard their crop from wild boars and other animals. Hence, on the Kailpoldu day, the weapons are taken out of the Pooja room, cleaned and decorated with flowers. They are then kept in the “Nellakki Nadubade” – central hall of the house, the place of community worship. Each member of the family has a bath and then they worship the weapons.
