Gaddige or Gadduge or Raja’s Tomb in Madikeri Coorg Gaddige or Gadduge: Gaddige or Gadduge: Gaddige/Gadduge, the tombs of King Virarajendra, Lingarajendra and one of their court priests built in the 18th century rest in the northern corner of the town. Two smaller tombs are also located in the same area belonging to their brave and loyal soldiers. The three main tombs, with a dome in the center and turrets at each end, built separately from one another on a hillock resemble a Muslim pilgrim center. The bars of windows made of brass have fine engravings. Madikeri Fort in Coorg Historical Madikeri Fort: Madikeri Fort: This 19th century fort, in the centre of Madikeri, houses a Ganesha temple, a chapel, a district prison and a small museum. The fort offers a beautiful view of Madikeri. This fort is one of the most beautiful places to visit during the trip to Coorg. Initially this fort was built by mud and later on mud was replaced by the concrete stone, by the great king Tipu Sultan. According to an official explanation board at the site, Mercara, the headquarters of Coorg or Kodagu district, was founded by Prince Mudduraja of the Haleri Dynasty in 1681 CE, and was named after him as Muddurajanakeri — which became “Muddukayray” and Madikeri over time. The British termed the place Mercara. Mudduraja built a mud fort and a palace inside the fort, in the last quarter of the 17th century. This fort was later rebuilt of granite masonry, after it was captured by the “Tiger of Mysore” Tipu Sultan. Tipu named it Jaffarabad. In 1790, Doddaveer Rajendra took possession of the fort, and in April 1834, the British took control of it. Built on an elevated area, the fort has been described as an “irregular hexagon” on the plan, almost confirming to the shape of the hilltop. There are six circular bastions at the angles, the entrance on the east is intricate and circuitous and guarded by three successive gates. Majestically looking over the area are two life-sized elephants made of mortar in the north-east corner of the entrance. A small but imposing church at the south-east corner was built in 1855 and is presently home to an archaeological museum (photography prohibited inside). Kaveri Nisargadhama in Coorg Kaveri Nisrgadama: Kaveri Nisrgadama: Forest department is maintaining this wonderful picnic spot, on the banks of river Cauvery, near Kushalnagar. The island is accessible through a Hanging Rope Bridge. There are deer, rabbits, peacocks, and a children’s playground as well as an orchidarium.The hanging bridge, pedal boat centre, tree top shelters, elephant safari, deer park is the main attractions of Cauvery Nisargadhama. Forest Department provides bamboo cottages and brick cottages for tourists. Visitors are allowed to get into the water at a few shallow and safe points along the river. Elephant rides and boating are some of the other attractions. It also has a forest department-run guest house and treetop bamboo cottages.Situated at a distance of 2 km from Kushalnagar on the Mysore-Madikeri Road. This is a man-made island with an area of 65 acres. Dubare Elephant Camp in Coorg Dubare Elephant Camp: Dubare Elephant Camp: The Dubare Elephant Camp is a chance to get to know these giant, enchanting creatures better. With a host of activities built around this, many a guest has left the camp with a sense of responsibility to do their bit towards protecting elephants. A trained naturalist takes our guests through the complexities of elephant history, ecology and biology. Here, you not only get to observe the activities but actually get to interact with the elephants. Generally, guests spend over three hours with the elephants. Roll up your sleeves and pitch in for an elephant grooming session – watching elephants being given a scrub-bath in the river, with rituals like oil being applied to their forehead, tusks and the other aspects of elephant grooming will change your idea of pet maintenance. Once the bath is done, learn how elephant food is prepared and how they’re fed. Mahouts will also demonstrate how elephants obey commands and how they functioned during their earlier role in logging operations. And if you’re in the mood, you can take a fifteen-minute elephant ride into the Dubare Reserve Forest. You even get to witness how a howdah is tied. Meanwhile, you can also try out a coracle ride. These circular rafts give you a typical River Cauvery experience. Spotting a crocodile or two, sunning on the banks, is a highly likely prospect. Other species present are chital spotted deer, muntjac (barking deer), mouse deer, four-horned antelope, wild boar, sloth bear, hyena, mongoose, civet, otter, and more. The landscape is one of gentle slopes and shallow valleys. Dry deciduous forest trees are leafless in the summer rather than in the winter. There are grassy swamps where the soil is clayey, perennially moist, and which support a luxuriant growth of green grass all year. The change in terrain throughout the park in refreshing and the river system provides a unique wildlife viewing experience. Nagarhole National park derives its name from the combination of two Kannada words. ‘Nagar,’ meaning snake, and ‘hole,’ meaning streams. In 1975, its area was increased to include a greater expanse of forest reserve. The original forest was once an exclusive hunting ground for the erstwhile Maharajas of Mysore.
