Kaveri Nisargadhama in Coorg Kaveri Nisrgadama: Kaveri Nisrgadama: Forest department is maintaining this wonderful picnic spot, on the banks of river Cauvery, near Kushalnagar. The island is accessible through a Hanging Rope Bridge. There are deer, rabbits, peacocks, and a children’s playground as well as an orchidarium.The hanging bridge, pedal boat centre, tree top shelters, elephant safari, deer park is the main attractions of Cauvery Nisargadhama. Forest Department provides bamboo cottages and brick cottages for tourists. Visitors are allowed to get into the water at a few shallow and safe points along the river. Elephant rides and boating are some of the other attractions. It also has a forest department-run guest house and treetop bamboo cottages.Situated at a distance of 2 km from Kushalnagar on the Mysore-Madikeri Road. With a host of activities built around this, many a guest has left the camp with a sense of responsibility to do their bit towards protecting elephants. A trained naturalist takes our guests through the complexities of elephant history, ecology and biology. Here, you not only get to observe the activities but actually get to interact with the elephants. Generally, guests spend over three hours with the elephants. Roll up your sleeves and pitch in for an elephant grooming session – watching elephants being given a scrub-bath in the river, with rituals like oil being applied to their forehead, tusks and the other aspects of elephant grooming will change your idea of pet maintenance. Once the bath is done, learn how elephant food is prepared and how they’re fed. Mahouts will also demonstrate how elephants obey commands and how they functioned during their earlier role in logging operations. And if you’re in the mood, you can take a fifteen-minute elephant ride into the Dubare Reserve Forest. You even get to witness how a howdah is tied. Meanwhile, you can also try out a coracle ride. These circular rafts give you a typical River Cauvery experience. Spotting a crocodile or two, sunning on the banks, is a highly likely prospect. The surrounding forests are home to exciting wildlife like the gaur, leopard, the wild dog, sloth bear, peacock, partridges, etc. Also during the months of July, August and September, JLR arranges for monsoon river rafting in the stretch adjacent to the camp. Other species present are chital spotted deer, muntjac (barking deer), mouse deer, four-horned antelope, wild boar, sloth bear, hyena, mongoose, civet, otter, and more. The landscape is one of gentle slopes and shallow valleys. Dry deciduous forest trees are leafless in the summer rather than in the winter. There are grassy swamps where the soil is clayey, perennially moist, and which support a luxuriant growth of green grass all year. The change in terrain throughout the park in refreshing and the river system provides a unique wildlife viewing experience. Nagarhole National park derives its name from the combination of two Kannada words. ‘Nagar,’ meaning snake, and ‘hole,’ meaning streams. True to its name, quite a few serpentine streams fork through the rich tropical forests of the park. Nagarhole Park was set up in 1955. In 1975, its area was increased to include a greater expanse of forest reserve. The original forest was once an exclusive hunting ground for the erstwhile Maharajas of Mysore. This sanctuary is named after Talakaveri, the origin of the Cauvery River which lies on the eastern edge of the sanctuary. The origin of the river Cauvery is place of religious importance for the people of Kodagu. Talakaveri was declared as Wildlife Sanctuary on 31 Aug / 1 Sep 1987. Talakaveri wildlife sanctuary is spread about 105.01 sq. km and it is covered with tropical evergreen forests. A few coffee and cardamom plantations are also covered within the sanctuary. Talakaveri Wildlife Sanctuary is home to mammals like Elephant, Tiger, Jackal, Gaur, Wild pig, Sloth bear, Lion-tailed Macaque, Leopard, Leopard cat, Wild dog, Nilgiri Marten, Common Palm Civet, Brown Palm Civet,Bonnet Macaque, Common Langur, Sambar, Spotted Deer, Malabar Giant Squirrel, Giant Flying Squirrel, Barking Deer, Mouse Deer, Clawless otter, Common Mongoose, Brown Mongoose, Striped-Necked Mongoose, Ruddy Mongoose and Porcupine. Snakes that are found in Talakaveri Wildlife Sanctuary include the king cobra, rat snake, cobra and python. Dipterocarpus indicus, Hopea parviflora, Dysoxylum malabaricum, Pallaquim ellipticum, Mesua ferrea and Artocarpus lakoocha are some of the species of flora found in this sanctuary. Talakaveri wildlife sanctuary also houses interesting birds like Great pied hornbill, Malabar trogon, fairy bluebird, broadbilled roller and black eagle. Brahmagiri Wild Life Sanctuary has evergreen and semi green forests as well as shola grassland habitat. The sanctuary is named after Brahmagiri peak here whose height varies from 65 to 1607 m. Brahmagiri was declared as sanctuary on 5th June 1974. The eastern tip of the Brahmagiri Wild Life Sanctuary almost touches the north western edge of the Nagarahole National Park; a thin stretch of coffee plantation is between these two. The southern boundary connects Kerala State. Brahmagiri Wild Life Sanctuary is spread about 181.80 sq. km. The area has mainly evergreen and semi-green forest, and in the higher altitudes, there are grasslands with shola forest patches. Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary in Coorg Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary: Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary: (Area ( Sq kms ) – 92.65 km², Vegetation – Evergreen and Semi-Evergreen) Pushpagiri Wildlife Sanctuary is located in Somwarpet taluk of Kodagu district in southern Karnataka. It is noted as one of the important bird areas of the world and home to rare and endangered bird life. It is spread over 102 Kms. The sanctuary adjoins Bisle reserve forest to the north and Kukke Subramanya forest range to the west. The topography is marked by steep terrains with waterfalls along its many mountain streams. Several swamps are also present in this sanctuary. The altitude of the sanctuary varies from 160 to 1712 Mts, Pushpagiri peak is the highest in the northern side. The sanctuary is one of the largest areas of tropical evergreen forests in Karnataka with nearly 70% of the sanctuary covered with forests. Pushpagiri has dense evergreen and semi-evergreen vegetation, with shola forests and grasslands in areas of higher elevation. Indian Wild Dog, Brown Palm Civet, Indian Giant Squirrel, Indian Hare, Spotted Deer, Sambar, Indian Muntjac, Gaur, Asian Elephant, Wild Pig, Giant Flying Squirrel, Travancore Flying, Otter species, Stripe-necked mongoose and mouse deer are some of the animal species found here. Three species of primates found here are common langur, bonnet macaque and lion-tailed macaque Recognized as an Important bird Area the sanctuary has a rich diversity of birds  like the Nilgiri wood-pigeon and Near threatened species like grey-breasted laughing thrush, black and orange flycatcher and Nilgiri flycatcher  are found in this sanctuary.
