The word Brahmagiri literally means mountain peaks covered with fog. The Brahmagiri Hills are situated at the border between Wayanad district of Kerala on the south and Kodagu district of Karnataka in the north. The hills are situated at an altitude of one thousand six hundred and eight meters above mean sea level. On the Kerala side of the Brahmagiri Hills, a temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu had been built. The Brahmagiri Hills are at a distance of eleven kilometres from Thirunelli. The temple is also known as Dakshina Kasi or the Kasi of South. The other old temples and sacred ponds make the hills a popular destination for devotees. The peak of the Brahmagiri Hills is covered with dense a forest which, in turn, thrives with abundant wildlife. Besides these, coffee and orange plantations can also be found on the hilly slopes. Brahmagiri hills offer a number of sightseeing spots as well. For instance, Pakshipathalam is situated at an elevation of 1740 meters. It is an attraction in the Kerala part of Brahmagiri where there is an ancient cave. The Karnataka side of the cave is known as Munikal cave. The Iruppu Falls of the Lakshmana Tirtha River lies in the Karnataka part of Brahmagiri. It is a major attraction and is a thrilling experience for travellers. Situated at a height of  1259 mts. Malethirike Hill or Male Hill in Coorg Male Hill (Malethirike): Male Hill (Malethirike): The most fascinating of them all is the Malethirike Shiva Temple. Set in the scenic Malethirike Hill — part of the Chomakund range, known for its treacherous slopes and dense vegetation — the temple destination is incredibly pristine! With floating clouds kissing the green trees, we thought we had walked into the pearly gates of heaven! What attracted us to Malethirike was the impressive drive with breathtaking views. A narrow road with many hairpin bends took us to the top of the hill. Many people trudge up the hill and the two-hour trek is made comfortable by shady trees lining the path. Actually, there is no temple building. Under the canopy of trees are five udhbhava, or self-manifested Shiva Lingams. There are many stories about the Malethirike shrine. The five Pandava brothers are believed to have prayed here during their exile.  You will find bells of different sizes hanging in neat rows all along the open stairway and the natural spring ponds, leading up to the small clearing where the lingams are. We enquired, but no one seemed to know when the custom of offering bells started. But every time, a devotee’s wish comes true, he offers a bell. Some soldiers from Tipu Sultan’s retreating army are said to have rested here for some time. There is a small collection of shields, cannon balls and swords, which the priest proudly displays.
